In Kashubia with the Platinum Team

On the first weekend of September in Borzytuchom, the G4PL project team collected research data from residents of Kashubia, including families affected by rare diseases. This was the first sample collection campaign involving patients and their families, organised in collaboration with the Platinum Team Foundation and the OPEN Biobank in Poznań. Seven meetings with people interested in taking part in the project were organised at the Foundation’s headquarters in Borzytuchom. At each meeting, listeners had the opportunity to attend a short lecture during which the project manager of ‘G4PL – Genomics for Poland’, Prof. Luiza Handschuh, spoke about the project and genetic research being conducted in Poland and around the world. Dr Karolina Śledzińska from the Centre for Rare Diseases at the Medical University of Gdańsk also took part in the first meeting; she announced a collaboration with the G4PL consortium in the field of rare diseases. Thanks to this collaboration, people in whom mutations causing rare genetic diseases are detected will be able to discuss their results with geneticists from the Centre for Rare Diseases.

Interest was high – over 200 people visited the Platinum Team’s headquarters on 5 and 6 September. A total of 196 samples were collected.

Further sample collection events are planned for later in September in Gdańsk, Wrocław and near Warsaw.

The G4PL – Genomics for Poland project is co-financed by the European Union under the European Funds for a Smat Economy program.
