This time, the host of Europe\u2019s largest genetics conference, organised annually bythe \nEuropean Society of Human Genetics, (ESHG), was Sweden.<\/em>Between 13 and 16 June \n2026, the city of Gothenburg welcomed nearly 5,000 participants and exhibitors, whilst over \na thousand people took part in the event online. As always, the ESHG conference provided \na significant boost of knowledge and motivation to continue acquiring it and discovering what \nremains to be discovered. Winners of prestigious awards shared their experiences on the \npath to scientific success:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Anne Cambon-Thomsen \u2013 Honorary Director of Research at the CNRS, Centre for \nEpidemiology and Population Health Research (INSERM) at the University of Toulouse in \nFrance, a specialist in immunology, transplantology, population genetics and ethics in \ngenetic research (winner of the 2026 ELPAG Award Lecture );<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Tuuli Lappalainen \u2013 Professor at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, \nDirector of the National Genomic Infrastructure and the SciLifeLab Genomic Platform in \nSweden, and a senior faculty member at the New York Genome Center; participant in the \nGTEx (Genotype-Tissue Expression) Project (winner of the ESHG Award);<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Guillaume Canaud \u2013 a professor of translational medicine and targeted therapies at the \nNecker-Enfants Malades Hospital in Paris \u2013 has successfully implemented a new treatment \nfor rare genetic disorders that cause uncontrolled tissue growth, PROS PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum<\/em>) (winner of the Mendel Lecturer Award 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Monday\u2019s poster session on 15 June, Luiza Handschuh, project manager of \u2018G4PL \u2013 \nGenomics for Poland\u2019, presented the project\u2019s objectives and implementation plan. The \nposter attracted considerable interest from both Polish and international participants. The \nsecond poster from the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (IBCH) of the Polish Academy of \nSciences, on Batten disease and the genetic variants associated with this condition found in \nthe Polish population, was presented by Ma\u0142gorzata Marcinkowska-Swojak. The study was \ncarried out in collaboration with the Platinum Team Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after the conference ended, on 17 June, a Genome of Europe project meeting took \nplace \u2013 another opportunity to network, exchange experiences and gain valuable insights \ninto the implementation of large-scale genomic projects. The G4PL consortium was \nrepresented at the meeting by Luiza Handschuh (IBCH PAS) and B\u0142a\u017cej Marciniak \n(University of \u0141\u00f3d\u017a).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
