The collaboration between the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of \nSciences and the OPEN Biobank in Pozna\u0144 has already brought its first results. During \nSaturday\u2019s \u2018Picnic at the General\u2019s\u2019 in Turwia, 77 blood samples were collected from donors \nin the Ko\u015bcian and Pozna\u0144 districts. This marks a key milestone in the implementation of the \nstrategic G4PL project \u2013 Genomics for Poland.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 23 May, in collaboration with the OPEN Biobank, the process of collecting biological \nmaterial for the G4PL project began; 12 leading scientific and research institutions in the \ncountry are involved in the project. The Saturday event, organised by the Institute of \nBioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBCH PAS) \u2013 the project leader \u2013 \nin the picturesque setting of Turwia Palace, attracted considerable interest. As a result, the \nfirst 77 blood samples were collected, from which DNA will be isolated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a blood sample to genome analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collecting the samples is just the start of a complex process, the ultimate aim of which is to \nexpand the genomic database of Poland\u2019s population. The collected blood samples will now \nbe sent to a laboratory, where the genetic material (DNA) will be isolated. The next step will \nbe to prepare so-called DNA libraries and subject them to high-throughput whole-genome \nsequencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data obtained from sequencing will undergo advanced bioinformatic analysis. The aim \nof this work is to create a genomic map \u2013 a database that reflects as fully as possible the \ngenetic diversity of the population living in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is it so important?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the researchers emphasise, the creation of a central repository for genomic data in \nPoland and the gradual addition of new data to it form the foundation of modern biology and \nmedicine. The knowledge gained will contribute to the development of scientific research, \ngenetic diagnostics and personalised treatment methods, enabling a more effective, \n\u2018tailor-made\u2019 adaptation of existing and emerging therapies to the specific needs and genetic \nprofiles of Polish patients. Furthermore, a portion of the sequenced genomes will form our \ncontribution to the European genetic variation database being established as part of the Genome of Europe (GoE)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another chance to provide a sample this Saturday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is not slowing down. The next opportunity to take part in the research and \nprovide a sample will be on 30 May (Saturday) in Pozna\u0144<\/strong>. The Biobank OPEN team and \nresearchers from the IBCH PAS will be waiting for donors at the Institute\u2019s headquarters at \n17\/19 H. Wieniawskiego Street, between 10.00 and 14.00<\/strong>, during workshops organised by the Centre for Innovation and Social Education (CIES) at the IBCH PAS.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
