It was then that \nthe world learned that DNA, the molecule that carries our genetic information, has a \ndouble-helix structure. It wasn\u2019t until half a century later that the success of the Human \nGenome Project was announced. Today, DNA Day is not only a celebration for biologists, but \nalso an opportunity to reflect on how 3 billion base pairs influence our health and lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83e\uddec <strong>The Scale Phenomenon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most astonishing aspects of DNA is the contrast between its physical length and \nthe size of a cell. If we were to stretch out the DNA strand contained in just a single human \ncell, it would be as long as 2 meters. The scale is even more impressive when we look at the \nentire organism: the DNA of all the cells in a single human being (of which there are trillions), \nwhen joined together, is several dozen times longer than the distance from Earth to the Sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83c\udf0d <strong>Biological relationship<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genetics teaches us that all life on Earth uses the same genetic code. Although we differ \nmorphologically as species, the molecular processes occurring in our cells are strikingly \nsimilar. We share about 98-99% of our DNA sequence with chimpanzees, which is clear \nevidence that we descend from a common ancestor. Even more intriguing is the fact that \nabout 50% of our genes have counterparts in the genomes of plants, such as the banana. \nThis does not mean that we are \u201chalf-plants,\u201d but that basic life processes\u2014such as cell \ndivision or energy metabolism - are virtually identical for most forms of life on our planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcbe <strong>The best hard drive in the world<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While engineers strive to miniaturize hard drives, nature has achieved absolute mastery in \nthis field. DNA is an extremely stable and dense medium for storing information. It is \nestimated that one gram of DNA can store approximately 215 petabytes of data (215 million \ngigabytes). That is enough to store a significant portion of humanity\u2019s digital legacy in a \nspace the size of a sugar cube. Additionally, unlike magnetic tapes or SSDs, which degrade \nafter a dozen or so years, DNA can survive for millennia if stored under the right conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udd52 <strong>A genetic time machine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our DNA is not only a \u201cblueprint\u201d for building proteins, but also the most accurate historical \nrecord ever written. Thanks to genomic DNA sequencing, we know that most modern \nhumans have between 1% and 4% Neanderthal DNA in their genome. These genetic traces \nof the migrations and encounters of our ancestors tens of thousands of years ago influence \nour immune system, skin structure, and even our susceptibility to certain diseases.
