Consortium members

The G4PL consortium consists of 12 institutions from across the country: 3 institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences, 6 universities, 2 research institutes, and one representative of the Łukasiewicz research network.

The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the largest institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of three fields: chemistry, biology, and computer science. Since the institute’s inception, its research has focused on nucleic acids—RNA and DNA. Research focuses on aspects related to the synthesis, structure, and function of these molecules, their interactions with other molecules, as well as potential practical applications, such as in biotechnology and medicine. The research utilizes modern technologies such as NMR, X-ray crystallography, high-resolution microscopy, next-generation sequencing, CRISPR, and single-cell analysis. In the search for new drugs, high-throughput screening is conducted, and potential therapeutics are tested in model systems such as cell lines, organoids, viruses, nematodes, or mice.

IBCH PAS currently employs approximately 800 staff members, half of whom work at the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC), which is affiliated with the InstituteApproximately 50 of these individuals are doctoral students enrolled in the Poznań Doctoral School of the Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In the most recent evaluation, the IBCH PAN was assessed in three disciplines, receiving the highest scientific ratings: A+ in biological sciences, A+ in chemical sciences, and A in technical computer science and telecommunications. The IBCH PAS extensive equipment and highly specialized staff enable the implementation of nearly 200 projects annually. These efforts result in, among other things, scientific publications, with an average of 180 produced each year. To date, IBCH PAS staff and doctoral students have published over 2,700 articles in journals indexed in the Web of Science database.

Affiliated with the PSNC Institute, it serves as a key hub in the Polish and European scientific IT infrastructure. It provides information and communication technology support to other research centers in Poland and abroad and participates in numerous research and development projects. PSNC has built and manages the POZMAN Metropolitan Network, comprising over 300 km of its own fiber-optic cables connecting all research institutions in Poznań and the surrounding area. Since 2001, it has been implementing the construction of the PIONIER research network, which comprises 6,878 km of fiber-optic cables in Poland and 4,080 km in Europe, connecting Polish academic communities in 21 cities and 5 High-Performance Computing Centers (KDM). It currently offers the academic community access to computing resources with a total capacity of 29.6 PFLOPS and data storage capabilities of 48 PB. The PSNC houses a KDM center and one of six European quantum computers. AI Factories funded by the European Commission and the Polish government are also currently being built there. 

Genomics is one of the key areas of development at the IBCH PAS, where genome analysis technologies were implemented relatively early on, first using microarrays (2004/2005) and then next-generation sequencing (2010/2011). At that time, in collaboration with the Institute of Computer Science at Poznań University of Technology, the Institute established the European Center for Bioinformatics and Genomics (ECBiG), which carried out the first large-scale genomic project in Poland between 2016 and 2023. As part of the project, approximately 6,000 DNA samples were collected from residents of Poland. This resulted in the creation of a reference database named the Genomic Map of PolandIn the next project, ECBiG-MOSAIChttps://mosaic.ichb.pl/, in cooperation with the Stefan Cardinal Wyszyński National Institute of Cardiology – State Research Institute in Warsaw (NIKARD) and the Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Institute of Oncology – State Research Institute – Gliwice Unit (NIO-PIB), approximately 4,000 DNA samples from cardiology and oncology patients were collected and sequenced. In total, approximately 10,000 complete genomes of Polish residents were collected, constituting the largest genomic data resource in the country to date. The data is stored on PSNC servers and serves as the starting point for the G4PL project. 

Since October 2024, IBCH PAS, as one of two Polish institutions (along with the University of Łódź), has been participating in Europe’s largest genomic project, Genome of Europe (GoE, https://genomeofeurope.eu/).

The Institute of Human Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IHG PAS) is a leading research center in Poland specializing in human genetics, biotechnology, and medicine, employing approximately 100 staff members. It holds a Category A scientific classification in the field of medical sciences and is authorized to award doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in medical sciences in the discipline of medical biology. Research conducted at IHG PAS focuses on analyzing the molecular basis of human diseases, developing modern diagnostic methods, and advancing innovative gene and cell therapies.

The Institute is equipped with modern research infrastructure, including next-generation sequencers, flow cytometers, systems for metabolic and electrophysiological analysis, in vivo imaging platforms, and high-resolution microscopes. As the only center in Central and Eastern Europe, the IHG PAS holds certification from 10X Genomics for spatial transcriptomics analysis. The Institute also has a modern animal facility enabling advanced in vivo preclinical research. The animal facility is equipped with a modern operating room adapted for small-animal microsurgery and a molecular imaging system. 

The IGC of the Polish Academy of Sciences is a member of national and international research networks and consortia, including ERDERA (European Rare Diseases Research Alliance, https://erdera.org/), selected through the European Commission’s Horizon Europe call for proposals for a European partnership on rare diseases for the period 2024–2031. IHG PAS is the only Polish representative in this initiative.

The Institute collaborates with numerous entities in the healthcare sector, as well as the medical and pharmaceutical industries, supporting the development of innovative technologies and the transfer of knowledge into clinical practice.

The M. Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (hereinafter the Nencki Institute) is one of Poland’s leading research institutions, holding the highest scientific category, A+, in the field of biological sciences. The Institute’s activities focus on three main areas: scientific research, technology transfer, and education. The Institute conducts basic research in the field of biological sciences and is authorized to award doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in this field. The main focus of research is on new therapies and diagnostic methods for neurodegenerative diseases, neurological disorders, cancer, diabetes, metabolic disorders, and other lifestyle-related diseases. The Institute’s research team combines the latest knowledge with technological advances to develop innovative scientific strategies for solving the complex problems of modern biology and medicine.

The Nencki Institute’s international distinction stems from its combination of basic research with modern technologies and the intensive transfer of knowledge into practice. Research is conducted in Warsaw and at the Institute’s campus in Mikołajki, where the National Center for Advanced Bioimaging Analysis is located. The Nencki Institute also fulfills its mission through collaboration with industry (including as part of the SPARK Poland initiative) and by educating future leaders in science, including through the Warsaw Doctoral School of Exact and Biomedical Sciences (Warsaw-4 -PhD) and the International Doctoral School of Biological Sciences and Translational Medicine (Bio4Med).

The Institute employs over 350 staff members, including leading experts in various fields of biology and biomedicine. Research is supported by extensive technical facilities and service laboratories offering, among other things, preclinical studies, flow cytometry, DNA sequencing, and a wide range of biological imaging capabilities, from electron microscopy to magnetic resonance imaging.

The Institute is involved in ambitious research projects funded by national and international sources. Over the past five years, it has completed and carried out more than 270 projects with a total value of over 891 million PLN. The Institute collaborates with 84 centers in 23 countries and participates in prestigious scientific initiatives, such as the Dioscuri programs, the International Research Agenda (MAB), the Virtual Research Institute (WIB), the Human Frontier Science Program Organization, and SPARK Global.

Poznań University of Technology (PUT) is a public technical university and one of Poland’s leading academic institutions. The university comprises nine faculties, including the Faculty of Computer Science and Telecommunications, which houses the Institute of Computer Science, directly involved in the implementation of the G4PL project. The Institute of Computer Science specializes in research and education in the fields of computer science, algorithms, artificial intelligence, databases, software engineering, and computer system security. It offers degree programs in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Bioinformatics.

PUT represents a broad spectrum of academic disciplines and holds the highest A+ rating in materials engineering and chemical sciences, as well as an A rating in seven other disciplines, including technical computer science and telecommunications. Research conducted at PUT is characterized by a high level of interdisciplinarity and strong ties to industry. The university actively participates in international initiatives, such as the European University Initiative (EUNICE) under the Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programs. An important element of the strategy is the development of dual-degree programs, the establishment of an interdisciplinary Doctoral School, and the promotion of faculty and student mobility.

Currently, 2,238 employees work at the University of Technology. The university is authorized to award doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in many disciplines, including architecture and urban planning, technical computer science and telecommunications, automation and electronics, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, chemical engineering, and management sciences.

Between 2020 and 2024, PUT staff published over 5,000 papers indexed in the Web of Science database and carried out over 90 research projects totaling more than 100 million PLN. Funding came from domestic and international sources, such as the National Science Centre (NCN), the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), the Operational Programme “Innovation and Competitiveness” (POIR), Horizon Europe, and other EU programs.

PUT is a member of multiple national and international consortia and research networks. In the areas of technology transfer and the commercialization of research results, it has secured 298 patents, demonstrating its high innovative potential and effective collaboration with industry. The university actively develops mechanisms for intellectual property protection and supports the implementation of innovative technological solutions.

The University of Warsaw (UW) is the largest and one of the leading public universities in Poland, with full authority to confer doctoral and postdoctoral degrees, as well as the title of professor. In the G4PL project, UW is represented by the Center for New Technologies (CeNT), a research and teaching unit of UW employing approximately 140 full-time staff members. Between 2020 and 2025, CeNT staff authored over 1,000 scientific publications.

CeNT is currently involved in over 160 research projects funded by domestic and international sources, including the National Science Centre (NCN), the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBiR), the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP), the Ministry of Education and Science (MEiN), the National Agency for Research and Development (NAWA), IDUB, PORT, Horizon Europe, and other international programs. These are often interdisciplinary projects in the fields of molecular biology, structural studies of biomolecules, chemical compounds and materials, synthesis and development of new materials (including functional, nano-, and biomaterials), applied physics in modern technologies, and computational sciences. This research falls within scientific disciplines rated at the highest level: chemical sciences (A+), computer science (A+), physical sciences (A+), archaeology (A), Earth and environmental sciences (A), and biological sciences (B+).

The University of Warsaw (UW) is one of the partners in the Center for Preclinical Research and Technology (CePT) located on the Ochota Campus in Warsaw, within which a comprehensive biomedical research center comprising ten collaborating research centers has been established. The operation of CeNT UW within CePT ensures close collaboration on planned work regarding standards and solutions for the development of genomics in Poland, including with other institutions in the capital that are not part of the G4PL consortium. 

In collaboration with the Military Medical Institute — Public Institute of Research, the University of Warsaw is developing a network of Regional Digital Medicine Centers (RCMC), which will ultimately establish a network of biobanks, scientific databases, and analytical resources across Poland. Members of the CeNT UW Specialized Genomics Laboratory belong to the international association CTLS (Core Technologies for Life Sciences)—an organization dedicated to building networks that bring together scientists, technical staff, and administrative personnel managing shared resources. Between 2020 and 2025, the CeNT UW Specialized Genomics Laboratory analyzed over 35,000 samples in more than 250 scientific and commercial projects, resulting in, among other things, over 60 scientific publications. 

In the field of technology transfer, CeNT UW stands out for its high innovative potential, as evidenced by numerous patent applications and collaborations with the business community, including Genomed S.A., Warsaw Genomics S.A., MEDGEN, genXone S.A., as well as through European projects, such as the EIC Accelerator (in collaboration with MultiplexDX, Slovakia).

The Medical University of Białystok (UMB) is a modern public university dedicated to training highly qualified medical professionals, conducting scientific research, development, and implementation projects at the highest international level, and advancing clinical practice in line with the latest scientific advancements.

Education is offered by three faculties: the Faculty of Medicine, which includes the Department of Dentistry and the Department of English-Language Instruction; the Faculty of Pharmacy, which includes the Department of Laboratory Medicine; and the Faculty of Health Sciences. The university is authorized to award doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in the field of medical and health sciences in the following disciplines: medical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and health sciences.

In the evaluation of research activity for the years 2017–2021, UMB received an A+ rating in the field of pharmaceutical sciences and an A rating in the fields of medical sciences and health sciences, placing it among the top medical universities in Poland. The international significance of UMB is confirmed by its receipt of the prestigious Maria Skłodowska-Curie COFUND doctoral grant (Horizon 2020) and its membership in the EUNICE 4U consortium as an Associate Partner.

UMB is a leader in innovation and R&D in fields such as artificial intelligence in medicine, genomics, metabolomics, and bioinformatics. Between 2020 and 2024, UMB staff published a total of nearly 3,500 papers, 25% of which were produced in collaboration with international partners. 

UMB actively develops cooperation with the business community by commercializing innovative products and filing national and international patent applications. Its significant achievements include, among others, formulations and technologies that support cancer treatment, as well as innovative solutions for medicine and biotechnology.

UMB also carries out investment and educational projects funded by European and national grants totaling over 538 million PLN, continuously modernizing its research and teaching infrastructure and supporting staff development. The university employs 944 faculty members, including 139 full professors and 166 habilitated doctors, which represents one of the highest indicators of scientific potential in the country.

The University of Łódź (UŁ) is one of Poland’s leading public universities, with full authority to award doctoral and postdoctoral degrees. UŁ offers a wide range of academic disciplines, many of which received high ratings in the evaluation of research activity for the years 2017–2021. Among other distinctions, the university received a Category A rating in the biological and physical sciences.

The university's structure includes, among others, Center for Digital Biology and Biomedical Sciences – Biobank Łódźwhich represents the university in the G4PL project. Biobank Łódź is a unique institution on a national and European scale, specializing in genomic, microbiological, and environmental analyses, and equipped with a modern infrastructure for storing biological material. The center also serves as the operator of the Polish Node of the European Genome Archive (Local EGA). Together with the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, it is participating in a European project Genome of Europe (GoE). 

The University of Łódź employs over 3,800 staff members, including nearly 2,300 faculty members. The research and teaching staff are highly productive in terms of publications—nearly 22,000 works were published between 2020 and 2024. The University conducts large-scale research projects in collaboration with numerous national and international institutions. Since 2022, it has been a member of the UNIC alliance—the European University of Post-Industrial Cities—which supports the transformation of post-industrial cities through social inclusion, diversity, and sustainable development.

In the area of knowledge and innovation transfer, the university is actively expanding its collaboration with industry. In 2024, 51 inventions and utility models were filed with the Polish Patent Office, and 8 applications were filed with foreign institutions. In the same year, the University of Łódź obtained 24 patents, which demonstrates the university’s high potential for implementation and innovation.

Jagiellonian University (UJ) is the oldest, and also one of the largest and best public universities in Poland. The Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Biotechnology (WBBiB) is participating in the G4PL project on behalf of UJ. The faculty received a scientific category A rating in the Ministry’s most recent evaluation. In the past, it has twice been awarded the highest A+ category, and from 2014 to 2018, it held the status of a National Leading Scientific Center (KNOW). The Faculty employs approximately 250 people, including over 180 researchers.

WBBiB UJ specializes in basic and interdisciplinary research in the fields of biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, and biotechnology. Examples of research topics include: pathogen-host interaction projects, the molecular basis of cancer, the use of stem cells in disease therapies, inflammation, transcription factors and gene expression, the role of post-translational modifications, DNA damage and repair, phototherapy, drug transport, bioenergetics, and molecular modeling. The Department also develops projects with application potential.  

Faculty members at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology (WBBiB) at the Jagiellonian University publish approximately 200 scientific articles each year. Currently, the Faculty is carrying out over 100 projects, including national ones (NCN, MEiN, FNP, NCBiR) and international ones—such as those under the Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, and European Research Council (ERC) programs. In 2022, at WBBiB In 2022, the Dioscuri Center of Scientific Excellence was established at WBBiB, created on the initiative of the Max Planck Society and funded by the Ministry of Education and Science (MEiN) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

WBBiB is expanding its collaboration with industry. Between 2019 and 2024, several dozen projects involving companies from the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors were carried out, and over 150 research services were provided. The faculty participates in strategic consortia, such as TEAM-NET. In the process of knowledge transfer and commercialization, the university is supported by the CITTRU Technology Transfer Center. 

The WBBiB is home to the Laboratory of Biological Structure Imaging and Spatial Transcriptomics and the Laboratory of Proteomic Analysis—unique core facilities, which make their nationally unique equipment and expertise available to research teams, startups, and partners in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical industries.

The Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński National Institute of Cardiology – State Research Institute (NIKARD PIB), based in Warsaw, is the leading clinical center in the field of cardiology and cardiac surgery in Poland. It operates as a research institute with the highest, fourth-level reference status and plays a key role in both scientific research and postgraduate medical education in cardiology. The Institute conducts scientific research in the field of medical sciences, which received an A+ rating in the most recent evaluation, attesting to the highest quality of research. NIKARD PIB has full authority to confer doctoral and postdoctoral degrees.

The Institute employs over 1,300 staff members. Between 2020 and 2024, a total of over 1,800 publications were released, including nearly 1,300 scientific articles, which have been cited over 12,000 times (Web of Science, 2024). The Institute carries out a number of research, development, and clinical projects funded by national and EU funds. It is a member of research consortia such as HLS-EU, Discharge, and ERA-CVD. It has extensive experience in popularizing research results—it organizes and co-organizes various scientific events and cardiology symposia. In the field of technology transfer and commercialization, NIKARD PIB actively collaborates with industry and carries out development projects with implementation potential. 

NIKARD PIB is the initiator and operator of four nationwide medical registries: (1) the National Registry of Infectious Endocarditis; (2) the National Registry of Mechanical Circulatory Support; (3) the National Registry of Transvascular Electrode Extractions; (4) National Registry of Arrhythmia Ablation. During the pandemic, NIKARD PIB also maintained a central registry of COVID-19 patients. For many years, it has coordinated the Multicenter National Population Health Survey (WOBASZ), a program aimed at a comprehensive assessment of the health status of the Polish population, with a particular focus on cardiovascular diseases and related risk factors. The third edition of this program is currently underway, implemented as part of the National Program for Cardiovascular Diseases for 2022–2032 and funded by the Minister of Health.

The Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Institute of Oncology – State Research Institute, Gliwice Branch (NIO PIB) is a leading scientific and clinical center in the field of oncology in Poland, holding the status of a research institute and carrying out tasks within the healthcare system. The Institute conducts scientific research in the field of medical sciences, in which it has been awarded Category A status. NIO PIB Gliwice employs nearly 1,900 staff members, of whom over 100 are research personnel.

The Institute’s activities focus on interdisciplinary research in the fields of clinical oncology, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, oncological endocrinology, molecular biology, biotechnology, chemistry, bioinformatics, and cancer epidemiology. The Institute’s scientific and research activities closely support clinical practice, drawing on highly specialized research infrastructure and personnel.

Over the past five years, the Institute has published 877 scientific papers, achieving an impressive total impact factor of over 4,000 (an average of over 800 per year). Currently, over 50 research projects are underway at NIO PIB, funded by, among others, the National Science Centre (NCN), the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), the Agency for Science, Higher Education and Innovation (ABM), the Ministry of Education and Science (MEiN), and the European Commission (EC). The total value of these projects amounts to tens of millions PLN.

The Institute is an active participant in international consortia, including STOPSTORM (Horizon 2020; NIO-PIB is involved in patient recruitment, treatment, and data analysis, including the assessment of procedure quality and therapeutic parameters), EUnetCCC (EU Joint Action – HADEA, NIO-PIB Gliwice serves as co-leader of a task aimed at developing a sustainable management framework for the CCC network), and HoloSurge (HADEA, a project developing advanced tools for real-time 3D holographic visualization in oncological surgery, integrating AI, molecular diagnostics, and intraoperative navigation). The Institute also participates in European research networks such as Endo-ERN, the MD Anderson Global Academic Program, and the European Institute of Environmental Cancer (EIEC), as well as in national strategic consortia: the Center for Chemistry, Biology, and Translational Medicine, BioTechMed Silesia, and BIOFARMA.

In the field of technology transfer and commercialization, NIO-PIB Gliwice has extensive experience, as evidenced by numerous patent applications—between 2021 and 2024, the institute registered domestic and international inventions, including in the areas of molecular diagnostics for thyroid cancer, oncology, and targeted therapy.

Łukasiewicz – PORT is an interdisciplinary research and development institute belonging to the Łukasiewicz Research Network. It specializes in translational and implementation research at the intersection of life sciences, biotechnology, medicine, and materials engineering. The institute currently employs 328 staff members, including 170 people involved in research and development.

Research activities are focused on areas such as neurobiology, oncology, immunotherapy, biotechnology, epidemiology, bioengineering, and lifestyle-related and infectious diseases. Łukasiewicz – PORT conducts research based on modern laboratory infrastructure (clean room, biobank, materials laboratories) and actively collaborates with industry. Between 2021 and 2025, the institute published 147 scientific papers in top-ranked journals (top 10% CiteScore), and in 2025, a groundbreaking article appeared in "Nature" on the role of ILC2 immune cells in fighting cancer.

Over the past five years, Łukasiewicz–PORT teams have carried out 108 R&D, infrastructure, and educational projects with a total value exceeding 980 million PLN, including the prestigious P4Health project (15 million EUR in funding from Horizon Europe + 15 million EUR in complementary Polish funding), which aims to establish a Center of Excellence for Precision Phenotyping and Biological Data Banking. Other ongoing projects include biobanking, clinical data analysis using AI, cancer therapies, and the development of new types of vaccines. 

The Institute participates in international consortia, including EUCAIM (Digital Europe) and BBMRI-ERIC (European biobanks), and is also the initiator of the Wrocław BioTech Hub initiative, which brings together the activities of Wrocław’s scientific community, particularly in the medical sciences.

In the area of technology transfer and commercialization, Łukasiewicz – PORT has secured 70 patents (including 10 European and 4 U.S. patents), maintains active partnerships with industry, and has extensive experience in establishing spin-off companies—14 of which have been founded to date. The institute also performs contract research funded by companies and provides technology and investment consulting.
